Is there such a thing as Work / Life Balance?
I have kids, and I swear that balance is a constantly moving target, who evades me every single moment of life, and yet I have access to her, should I choose.
But, how to choose?
How to choose with all the demands of life? How to choose rest, green smoothies, and 90-minutes of yoga class when my mind won’t stop shouting orders about what needs to get done?
A balanced lifestyle could be a modern day myth.
And this is coming from a woman who preaches silent retreats, meditation, and connecting with nature to ground. I preach it because I live it every day. Or fight it, however you want to look at it.
Maybe it paints me as a hypocrite, but I like to look at myself more as a constant life student.
I don’t know if life is necessarily about work/ life balance, it is really more about having work feel so passionate, that it feels like a 90-minute yoga practice. It is about embodying what makes us tick, what makes us laugh (I love to laugh with my team), and what fuels our soul.
Perhaps the essence of balance is about creating space for us to be more of who we really are. And I get it, sometimes that means, we have to be honest that we don’t always know who we are, and we dive in to explore her.
That’s balance too; not knowing who we are, but unapologetically discovering ourselves.
I find that when I say I want more balance, what I really mean is: I am so darn responsible in providing for my family and I am exhausted from that, I need to leverage my business so that I am making more money & the business needs less of my physical presence. This way, I will be able to have alone time, practice yoga, travel more with my family, and feel less scheduled & hurried.
I start with money.
How about you?
Solution: start with money, but don’t stop there.
If I am wanting more balance, it is time to upgrade the business model, absolutely. AND, it also means embodying the pieces that I am craving; even if just for fractions of moments. Meaning that if I want quiet, I create quiet even in two minute increments. If I want to travel with my family, I set the manifesting wheels in motion to make it so. If I am feeling scheduled, I take a day off.
Tweet this! Balance is not one thing; it is an entire system working together to thrive.
I love Arianna Huffington’s book, Thrive, where she talks about the important role of mindfulness to bring balance. It reminds me that mindfulness is not about a 20-minute silent, eyes closed sitting, it is about being fully AWAKE every single moment and staying PRESENT to what works, what doesn’t work, and compassionately addressing from all angles.
May you be honest with yourself about what works, what does not work, address the issues, embody what you desire, thrive, and in doing so, balance shall come to you.
Love,
ASHA
